What is the Gematria Calculator?

The Gematria Calculator is a free browser tool on this page. You type a word, name, or phrase and it sums letter values in the cipher you select — English Ordinal, Full Reduction, Reverse, Sumerian, Jewish, or Hebrew — with a live total, digit reduction, letter breakdown, and optional matching words from a small index.

It is built for quick checks, not hidden algorithms. For the history and meaning of gematria as a practice — separate from this tool — read What Is Gematria?.

Why people use a gematria calculator

  • Check a name or word quickly

Type a first name, surname, or phrase and read Ordinal, Full Reduction, Reverse, Sumerian, and Jewish totals side by side.

  • Compare systems without redoing the math

The same spelling can be 54 in Ordinal and 18 in Full Reduction — the tabs show both without a second entry.

  • Study and tradition

Letter totals appear in Jewish and Christian textual commentary. Context for biblical use is on the Bible Gematria page — this tool only sums letters.

  • Search a number for matching words

When you already have a total and want indexed English words that share it, use the Gematria Decoder (number → words) instead of guessing spellings.

  • Open a single-cipher calculator

Need Reverse, Sumerian, Mispar Gadol, Siduri, or advanced methods as the main job? Each of those has its own page with a chart, worked examples, and common mistakes.

  • Lookup without a printed chart

When you already know the word, the calculator beats flipping a chart. For static A–Z tables, use the letter charts page.

For how letter-counting is used in Scripture, see biblical gematria. Static letter charts are on the gematria chart. To search words by number, open the Gematria Decoder. Totals are tradition and arithmetic, not proof — see the disclaimer.

Gematria systems comparison

Core English and Hebrew tabs on this page: Ordinal, Full Reduction, Reverse, Sumerian, Jewish, and Hebrew. Greek isopsephy has its own calculator because the alphabet and numerals differ.

Gematria systems comparison for this calculator

  • English Ordinal (Simple)
    Alphabet
    Latin A–Z
    How it counts
A=1 through Z=26; letters summed in order.
    Example
    LOVE = 54
    Best for
Standard English letter totals on this calculator.
  • Full Reduction (Pythagorean)
    Alphabet
    Latin A–Z
    How it counts
    A–I = 1–9, then the 1–9 cycle repeats through Z.
    Example
    LOVE = 18
    Best for
    Reduced / Pythagorean-style English totals.
  • English Reverse
    Alphabet
    Latin A–Z
    How it counts
A=26 through Z=1; reverse of ordinal place.
    Example
    LOVE = 54
    Best for
Comparing a word against its reverse-alphabet total.
  • English Sumerian
    Alphabet
    Latin A–Z
    How it counts
    Each ordinal value multiplied by 6 (A=6 … Z=156).
    Example
    LOVE = 324
    Best for
Ordinal scaled by six — a common English variant.
  • Jewish (English A–Z)
    Alphabet
    Latin A–Z
    How it counts
    A–I = 1–9, K–S = 10–90, T/U/X/Y/Z = 100–500, J=600, V=700, W=900.
    Example
    LOVE = 775
    Best for
Hebrew-style place values on English spelling.
  • Hebrew (Mispar Hechrachi)
    Alphabet
    Hebrew aleph–tav
    How it counts
Aleph=1 through tav=400 on Hebrew letters.
    Example
    חי (chai) = 18
    Best for
Hebrew script — tab here or the dedicated Hebrew page.
  • Greek (isopsephy)
    Alphabet
    Greek + Beta Code
    How it counts
Milesian values; not a tab on this page.
    Example
    Α (alpha) = 1
    Best for
Greek letters or Beta Code on the Greek calculator.

Four systems on this page — tap a tile for how it is counted and a worked example.

English Ordinal (Simple)

How it counts: A=1 through Z=26, summed in order. Often called “Simple gematria” elsewhere.

Example: LOVE is 12+15+22+5 = 54. This is the default system on the homepage calculator.

Full Reduction (Pythagorean)

How it counts: A–I = 1–9, then the cycle repeats through Z.

Example: LOVE reduces to 3+6+4+5 = 18. This is the 1–9 reduction map — not the A=1–26 chart many sites label Simple.

Jewish

How it counts: English letters using Hebrew-style place values.

Example: A–I = 1–9, K–S = 10–90, T/U/X/Y/Z = 100–500, J=600, V=700, W=900. LOVE = 20+50+700+5 = 775. This is not the Hebrew alphabet itself.

Hebrew

How it counts: The Hebrew aleph-bet, aleph=1 through tav=400.

Example: Use Hebrew letters (or the dedicated Hebrew page). Final forms count the same as standard forms here.

What the number means

A gematria value is the sum of the letter numbers in the text you typed. Different systems assign different numbers to the same letter, so LOVE is 54 in English Ordinal and 18 in Full Reduction. Switching tabs does not mean one result is wrong — each cipher is a separate mapping.

LOVE in two systems on this tool

English Ordinal: 54 · Full Reduction: 18. Switch tabs in the calculator above to see both without retyping.

Spaces and punctuation are ignored. Digits stay visible in the box but do not add to the total. Hebrew letters only count in the Hebrew tab; Latin letters only count in the English systems. A shared total is arithmetic, not proof that two words mean the same thing — see limits and responsible reading.

How gematria calculation works

Three steps on this page — the live tool does the arithmetic for you.

  1. Pick a cipher tab

Ordinal, Full Reduction, Reverse, Sumerian, Jewish, or Hebrew. Each tab is a separate letter-to-number map.

  2. Type your word

Enter a word, name, or short phrase. Spaces and punctuation are ignored; digits stay visible but do not add.

  3. Read, break down, copy

The total appears live. Open the letter breakdown, check other systems, copy the block, or try a matching word.

For English Ordinal, A is 1 and Z is 26. LOVE is L=12, O=15, V=22, E=5 → 54. Type LOVE in the calculator above to see the breakdown, not just the sum. To hand-check the same steps yourself, use the Letter Totals module.

Example gematria calculations

Frequently asked questions

  • What is a gematria calculator?
A gematria calculator maps each letter in a word, name, or phrase to a number, then sums those values. This one shows English Ordinal, Full Reduction, Reverse, Sumerian, Jewish (English A–Z), and Hebrew (Mispar Hechrachi) as tabs so you can compare systems without retyping.
  • How do I use a gematria calculator?
Type into the field at the top of this page. The value updates as you type. Switch systems with the tabs. Open the letter breakdown to see how each character was counted. Spaces and punctuation are ignored; only letters add to the total.
  • Is this gematria calculator free?
Yes. There is no account, no paywall, and no download. Calculation runs in your browser.
  • What's the difference between English, Hebrew, and Jewish gematria?
English Ordinal uses A=1 through Z=26. Full Reduction folds those into 1–9. Reverse uses A=26 through Z=1. Sumerian multiplies each ordinal value by 6. Jewish gematria on this site uses the English-letter mapping A=1–9, K=10–90, T=100–500 (J=600, V=700, W=900). Hebrew (Mispar Hechrachi) uses the Hebrew alphabet (aleph=1 through tav=400). Mispar Gadol, Siduri, and advanced methods live on the Hebrew calculator page.
  • Do spaces and punctuation count toward the total?
No. Spaces, commas, hyphens, and most punctuation are ignored. Only countable letters in the active tab add to the gematria value.
  • Do digits in the input add to the gematria value?
No. Digits can stay in the box for readability, but they are not summed. Only letters count in the active cipher.
  • What is simple gematria?
On most calculators, “Simple gematria” means A=1 through Z=26 — the same map as English Ordinal here (LOVE = 54). The separate 1–9 cycle on this site is Full Reduction (LOVE = 18), not that Simple label.
  • What is the difference between English Ordinal and Full Reduction on this calculator?
Ordinal uses A=1 through Z=26 (LOVE = 54). Full Reduction folds the alphabet into a 1–9 cycle (LOVE = 18). They are different ciphers, not a mistake. For a longer comparison, read English Ordinal vs Simple Gematria.
  • Can I calculate Hebrew on the home page?
Yes, on the Hebrew tab — but only Hebrew letters are counted there. For a full Hebrew alphabet chart, Jewish-vs-Hebrew notes, and longer examples, use the Hebrew Gematria Calculator.
  • What are matching words in the results?
When your total appears in the on-site word index, the tool lists other indexed words with the same value in that cipher. Matches are available for Ordinal, Full Reduction, Jewish, Reverse, and Sumerian. To search by number instead, use the Gematria Decoder. The list is growing, not a complete dictionary.
  • Is gematria the same as numerology?
Not exactly. Gematria is letter-to-number mapping in a stated alphabet. Numerology is a wider field (dates, life-path numbers, other name systems). For how the two relate, read What Is Gematria? — this page stays focused on the calculator.

Calculate a value

The gematria calculator above is the product: type a word, read the number, then open the breakdown if you want the arithmetic. Matching words come from a small on-site index, not a sold database.

Hebrew and Greek have their own pages because those alphabets are different jobs. For a definition first, read What Is Gematria?. For every letter value, use the letter value tables.
